Our methodology
Every plant profile on this site follows the same fixed rubric, so a claim on one page means the same thing on every other page.
How a plant profile is built
- Naming: botanical name per currently accepted taxonomy, plus common and regional/local names — with an explicit warning wherever the same common name refers to different species in different countries.
- Care data: light, water, humidity, temperature, soil, and fertilizer requirements cross-checked against horticultural extension-service and RHS guidance, stated with numbers and units rather than vague terms.
- Toxicity: pet and human toxicity stated on every page, checked per species — never assumed from a related plant.
- Troubleshooting: symptom → likely cause → fix tables based on the failure modes growers actually report, not hypotheticals.
- Pricing: typical retail ranges researched per region (US, UK, India, Australia, Canada), shown in USD by default with local-currency figures preserved. Ranges are indicative, dated, and never presented as live quotes.
- Legality: invasive-species status and import/biosecurity restrictions flagged per region, especially for plants banned or restricted somewhere our readers live.
How ranked guides are scored
Every "best of" guide publishes its evaluation criteria at the top of the page — care difficulty, availability across our five tracked regions, price-to-longevity, and category-specific factors. A plant can't appear in a ranked list unless it has a full profile on this site first.
Review process
Profiles are written by staff writers and reviewed by category experts (agriculturist, horticulturist, landscape professional, or specialist plant collector) before publishing. Reviewer profiles with named, verifiable credentials will be published as the editorial team is finalized.
Corrections
Found an error? Tell us — factual corrections are prioritized and pages carry a "last verified" date that reflects genuine re-review, not automatic re-dating.
