Anubias is a genus of slow-growing West African aquatic aroids grown attached to rock or driftwood rather than planted, with tough leathery leaves that most plant-eating fish leave alone. And a rhizome that rots if it is buried in substrate.

    Seasonal care#

    Spring
    Nothing seasonal indoors, but longer daylight can raise tank light levels near windows and trigger algae.
    Summer
    Watch tank temperature. Sustained water above 30°C stresses anubias and encourages rhizome rot.
    Autumn
    A good time to divide the rhizome and rescape while growth is steady.
    Winter
    Cooler rooms slow growth further; reduce fertiliser slightly and expect very little new leaf production.

    Often confused with#

    Bucephalandra: Also rhizome-grown and attached to hardscape with the same never-bury rule, but with smaller, often iridescent leaves and a wavy leaf edge.
    Java fern (Microsorum pteropus): Shares the attach-don't-bury rule, but has long strap-shaped fern fronds rather than anubias's broad oval leaves.

    Where it's actually grown#

    Almost all aquarium anubias is nursery-grown emersed in greenhouses in Southeast Asia, Sri Lanka, Denmark and Florida, or produced as sterile tissue culture; wild West African collection is now rare in the trade.

    Did you know?

    Anubias is not really an aquatic plant at all. In West Africa it grows on stream banks and rocks that only flood part of the year, which is why it survives fully submerged indefinitely and yet grows faster out of water. Commercial nurseries exploit this by growing every plant emersed and selling it into tanks.

    Can I plant anubias in aquarium substrate?

    No. Burying the rhizome cuts off oxygen and rots the plant. Tie or glue it to rock or driftwood with the rhizome fully exposed and only the roots touching the hardscape.

    Why is my anubias covered in algae?

    It grows too slowly to outgrow algae in bright tanks. Reduce light intensity and photoperiod, improve flow, and add algae eaters such as nerite snails or otocinclus.

    How fast does anubias grow?

    Does anubias need CO2 or special lighting?
